Scope & Content |
This collection consists of 165 gelatin silver prints and chromogenic color prints by photographer Brian V. Jones. It is comprised of three series: Series I: Street Scenes; Series II: African American Churches in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., 1981-1989; Series III: Connecticut Avenue Series. The Black Churches series consists of images of African American churches throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area. In 1986 Brian Jones received a grant from the Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities to photograph Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. The Connecticut Avenue series mainly shows 1) street scenes in Washington, D.C., such as local businesses, buildings, and people; 2) African American churches in the D.C. metro area; 3) images of life/street scenes along Connecticut Avenue, Washington, D.C. |

Brian V. Jones was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1952. Brian Jones has a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Master’s degree from Illinois Institute of Technology. He has been a professor of photography since the late 1980s and his photographs are in the collections of the National Museum of American Art, the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, Colgate University, and in numerous private collections. Since 1980, he has been a documentary photographer focusing on diverse large scale projects. He currently resides in Ellicott City, MD and serves as Professor of Photography and Coordinator of the Media Arts & Technologies Dept. at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD. |
