Scope & Content This collection contains the papers of the Perry Hall Improvement Association (PHIA), a local community advocacy group founded in 1945 by the residents of Perry Hall, Maryland, a residential community located in Baltimore County. The collection contains by-laws, histories, rosters, correspondence, minutes, research and case files, financial and legal documents, publications, clippings, and copies of local laws and regulations. Also included is a written history of Perry Hall that the group published in 1970 entitled "An Invitation to Memory"; a copy is available in Series IX.

Admin/Biographical History The Perry Hall Improvement Association was formed in 1945 to serve as a community interest group that would work to balance commercial and residential interests in the area. The Association worked on rezoning measures, reduction of speed limits, monitored commericial growth, and lobbying for residential programs such as improvements to the local library and post office. In 1970, they published a history of Perry Hall titled "An Invitation to Memory"; a copy is available in Series IX.

Provenance and Aquisition Information MSS 1994-04; The papers of the Perry Hall Improvement Association (PHIA) was donated in 1994 by Mrs. Genevieve Buetttner, a long time member of the PHIA Board of Directors.
Processing Information Accession records are not specific as to date of receipt or where the papers had been kept prior to coming to UMBC. The collection arrived at UMBC in nine cardboard boxes, unnumbered and without an existing order. The records and papers were in plastic bags, loose-leaf notebooks, manila envelopes and folders, with no arrangement other than within individual notebooks or files. The collection was processed and the finding aid written by Drew Alfgren, under the supervision of Marcia Peri, Archivist, in August 1999.
