Scope & Content Comprises one piece of correspondence from New York City photographer Jacob Riis to the Hon. Charles E. Hughes, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. In the letter, Riis congratulates Hughes on his appointment and discusses the candidacy of William Verbeck for Office of Adjutant General of the State of New York.

Admin/Biographical History Jacob Riis (1849-1914) was a journalist, photographer and social reformer; originally from Denmark, he arrived in the US in 1870. He pioneered documentary photography and used his art to comment on and incite awareness about societal problems, including urban poverty.
