Description |
1 Box (0.5 linear feet) |
Scope & Content |
This collection contains 40 carte-de-visite photographs at 2 x 4 inches. The photos contain portraits of one man; each album page has a different photograph of the same man. The album's pages have gilt edges. Each photo shows the unnamed, supposed actor in different poses and wearing costumes such as nobleman, captain, politician, deer; with various props like a whip, sword and shield; and set pieces such as a pillar and chair. Some are head shots, some mid-length, some full body. The creators of the photographs are Fischer & Bros., Case and Getchell, and "Gregory" and "Osborn." First inside page is written in pencil "40 cartes-de-viste of J Wilkes Booth (Tom Beck writes note in 1983 - "Not J.W. Booth") Found in Cincinnati Ohio." Subject looks somewhat like John Wilkes Booth and is presumably also an actor which may be why a connection was once made. The subject of the photographs is white, has dark hair and dark mustache, and his features and age are comparable to Booth. One photograph is not encased in the album page its back includes the printer's information, "Osborn, Photographer, 73 West Baltimore St., Md." The album is in a full sprinkled calf book with gold leaf locks and pages, and 4.75 x 6 inches. |
